MAYOR FOR A DAY

Mayor for a Day was held on April 15.  The program is sponsored by the Palos Heights Woman's Club in conjunction with the City of Palos Heights.  8th grade students from local schools enter an essay writing contest on what they would do for the city if they were Mayor.  12 winners were selected from 60 entries.  The students and their parents were invited to an awards ceremony held at Lake Katherine's clubhouse, followed by a mock city council meeting at City Hall.  The winners are pictured below with Mayor Robert Straz.  They are: Mike Busch (Mayor), Bryce McDade (City Clerk), Brian Abbott (City Treasurer), Madeline Wierzal (City Attorney), Emily Brace, Brendan Duffy, Shea Schaaf, Tul Elsiddig, Melina Bonomo, Lillie Byrne, Amanda Rice, Zack Zwierz (Aldermen)

 SHERIFF'S SENIOR MEDAL OF HONOR

Palos Heights resident, William (Bill) Poore, was a recipient of the 2008 Sheriff's Senior Medal of Honor.  Bill was nominated by Mayor Straz for the award.  Bill has been a very active volunteer in several organizations in the Palos Heights community including the Friends of Palos Heights Library, Palos Heights Recreation Advisory Board, Palos Heights Beautification Committee, Friends of the Cal Sag Trail and Friends of Lake Katherine.  Bill's dedication and love for his community go above and beyond that of most residents.  He is a gift to our community.  Pictured below: Bill Poore with Elaine Savage, Palos Heights Library, at the awards ceremony held on April 15 at the Chicago Cultural Center.
